Hey there bliss finder,
Have you ever wondered what the *real* difference is between branding and marketing?
Yea, me too! So, let me tell you.. many years and tears later – I’m so happy to be here to share with you how I found my own *spiritual definition* of branding, and how simple it truly is.
I hope you find my explanation relatable and empowering as you begin your own branding. So let’s dive right in..
When I first started my event business back in 2008, I thought of branding as an obscure and intangible *thing* I knew I had to have, but with no clear idea on how to get it. Everything I learned in college made it seem like it was something only the big businesses could achieve – because of the large amounts of money or years, they had poured into their ventures. There were also no real examples of small or mid sized companies with great branding I could glean from, or personal stories to read that showed how it tied our values, image, and personality into it.
To add to the mystery, as I researched the topic online – I only came across articles pointing to the need to “externalize” and “analyze,” your future ideal customer and niche – to properly brand. This naturally seemed backward to me, since after all – dont we start things because of our personal passions, desires and dreams?
After attempting to do branding in this way the first time in my event business, I felt personally disconnected, sold out, and in a perpetual state of chasing trends and fads that would never end! I knew deep down I needed to get clear on who I was and what I wanted to share.
And so I decided to re-brand and come up with my own spiritual definition of what branding was.
During my rebrand I understood that branding starts and ends with us. I decided to infuse my one-line mission statement on “why” I was doing parties into every part of my business. This not only felt authentic and true to me, but it really resonated with the families I was serving.
I also realized that branding was not a static thing that should remain the same throughout the years – instead it should grow and change with you and your company. I learned to drop the guilt I felt for “messing up” and learned to see it as part of the divine learning process!
Because of these experiences, my definition of branding now is:
The simple yet courageous act of choosing to infuse ourselves into something we are creating, through print, imagery and voice – that will help carry the specific passions, missions and message we wish to bring into the world.
This can take the shape of a business, blog, non-profit or charity, however way you choose to do it – it should always ring true with who you are. Branding to me is the heart of it all.
Now that you’re clear on the core concept of branding .. in today’s video I’ll go over the 2 types of branding, and how one is critical for the other, and how once I’m clear on my brand – I move forward in creating a Brand Style Guide and Brand Elements like a logo.
